New England’s Best American-born Division I College Hockey Player. Established in 1953 at a 20th reunion of the Massachusetts Rangers, America’s first World Champion Hockey team. Coached by Walter A. Brown, the team defeated the Toronto National Sea Fleas, 2-1 in overtime at Prague, Czechoslovakia, to win the 1933 world amateur title. It was the first time Canada had ever lost in international play. The Gridiron Club accepted stewardship of the Walter Brown Award in 1976.
The original Walter Brown Award trophy read: "Awarded annually to the player who best combines the attributes of sportsmanship, skill, and team spirit." To see a photo of the trophy that was awarded to Bob Babine of Boston College in 1954, click here.
