Flamekeeper Medal

Established in 2019, the Flamekeeper Medal recognizes those individuals who have performed extraordinary person al service to others.

2019 Mike Mushaw, Central Connecticut State

In July of 2018, Mike saved the life of an infant girl by donating his bone marrow that had been recognized as a genetic match for the gravely ill recipient. He had signed up for “Get In The Game, Save A Life” at Central Connecticut. That campaign partners with “Be The Match,” which works with college football teams and encourages players and others on campuses to enter a bone marrow donor registry.

Mike underwent the marrow-extraction procedure and, in his weakened condition, missed all summer football workouts and the first week and a half of camp in advance of the 2018 season, his sophomore year. He subsequently built back his strength and finished out his college football career.
